Speakers

Allan Black

Allan Black is the PRS Product Manager for the Joy Global Underground Mining Division.  He is responsible for Longwall Systems, Mining Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mines Rescue. Allan has over 30 years of experience in a variety of roles in the UK mining industry, including senior management roles in the mining and engineering disciplines. His mining roles included managing the installation, operation and salvage of longwall systems, including management of development drivages, coal clearance and transport systems; his engineering roles included planning, installing, and commissioning all types of mining equipment from individual pieces of kit to full longwall installations and major infrastructure projects. Allan’s notable achievements include planning and delivering a longwall system through a major fault and introducing modern equipment monitoring and reporting systems into the mine.

Rudie Boshoff

Rudie Boshoff is Global Services Director at Joy Global, where he helps oversee the company’s fully integrated JoySmart Solutions to help customers reduce costs, increase productivity and achieve or exceed operating and financial goals. Boshoff has a B.S. in electrical engineering from University of Pretoria and is skilled at developing operational productivity enhancements, global performance improvement strategies and synergistic team building initiatives. Previous roles at Joy Global have included Australia Service Director, Manager of Control & Automation and Australasian Engineering Manager.

Matt Collins

Matt Collins is the Product Manager for P&H Blasthole Drills in the Joy Global Surface Mining Division. He is responsible for guiding the direction for the Drill product line, including leading marketing functions, strategic development, and operational execution. Matt has held varying roles within P&H Mining Equipment including Letourneau Wheel Loader Product Management, leading the Software Engineering development for Remote Health Monitoring Surface Mining initiatives, Product Technology commercialization, and Mechanical Engineering new product development. Prior to joining Joy Global, Matt served in the US Army. Matt is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Kristina Fierro

Kristina Fierro is the Product Manager for Hybrid Excavators for the Joy Global Surface Mining Division.  She is responsible for the development and execution of the strategic marketing plan for the hybrid excavator product line. In addition, she supports the Joy Global field service teams with customer interactions and sales initiatives.  Kristina received a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering in 2012. She joined Joy Global in the same year and has held multiple roles, including mining applications engineering and product management within the shovel and hybrid excavator product lines.

Shawn Franklin

Shawn Franklin is the Chief Engineer for Longwall Shearers at Joy Global.  He is responsible for Original Equipment, Aftermarket, and New Product Development Engineering for Shearers globally.  He started his career at Joy Global in 1997 as an AFC mechanical design engineer.  After 2 years he moved into the Shearer Engineering department in a similar role and has held positions of increasing responsibility ever since. Shawn graduated in 1997 from Penn State – Behrend College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology.  While working for Joy Global, he also earned his MBA from Gannon University in 2005.

Jim Haughey

Jim Haughey is a Global Product Director, Room and Pillar for the Joy Global Underground Mining Division; prior to this role, he was the Product Manager for shearers and AFCs.  He is responsible for leading all aspects of Joy Global’s global room and pillar business, including continuous miners, heavy miners, shuttle cars, battery haulers and FCTs.  Jim is a mechanical engineer with over 23 years of experience in the design and application of underground mining equipment. He has been with Joy Global for over 23 years working in, and gaining increasing responsibility in, the continuous miner, haulage, aftermarket and shearer engineering departments.

Jason Knuth

Jason Knuth is a Senior Prognostic Engineer for the Joy Global Surface Mining Division.  He is responsible for global analytics, providing regions around the world with machine diagnostics to drive value for our customers; he assists in identifying, measuring and eliminating waste to solve our customers’ toughest challenges.  Jason received a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in the area of Fatigue and Failure Analysis. He has eight years of experience in R&D for electric and hybrid shovels and three years in applying data science for longwalls, continuous miners, conveyors and other mining equipment. He was named the Mechanical/Structural Engineer of the Year at Joy Global and holds eight patents.

Brad Neilson

Brad Neilson is the President of Hard Rock Mining for the Joy Global Underground Mining Division.  He is responsible for the creation and rapid growth of the hard rock business unit within Joy Global including the development and commercialization of transformational mining systems and opening new markets.  Brad has had various roles in his 16 years with Joy Global starting at the Director of Engineering, moving to Vice President and Managing Director Australasia and finally becoming President of Hard Rock Mining. He has been granted 10 US patents, with five additional patents pending.

Anthony Reid

Dr. Anthony Reid is the Program Manager, Remote Health Monitoring for the Joy Global Surface Mining Division.  He is responsible for the development and operation of the Joy Global analytics systems that are used for the delivery of JoySmart Solutions. Anthony has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, focusing on Estimation Theory, with extensive experience in the engineering of complex systems including automation and operator assist technologies for mining equipment. For the last two years, he has led the development of a global analytics platform that is used by regional Joy Global teams to understand the operation of equipment and solve the problems that are challenging their customers.

Gareth Rimmington

Gareth Rimmington C. Eng. is the Chief Engineer – AFC for the Joy Global Underground Mining Division.  He is responsible for Joy Global’s AFC products, managing a team of four engineering and contract managers and approximately 30 design engineers. Gareth’s area of expertise is engineering management. He is a UK registered Chartered Engineer with 15 years of experience in Engineering and Engineering Management. Gareth has a 1st Class Bachelor’s Degree in Multidisciplinary Engineering from the University of Sunderland and is currently studying for an MBA in Executive Leadership and Management at the University of Worcester. His employment roles have included Principal Engineer – AFC for Joy Global (managing the new product development team), Deputy Mechanical Engineer for UK Coal (managing the engineering function of a large coal mine for longwall production, salvage, installation and transport), and various other engineering management roles within coal mining covering all aspects of mine production and infrastructure. Gareth has 12 pending patents and wrote a thesis on an alternate use for an abandoned underground coal mine to store energy for peak demand smoothing and power conditioning.

Michael Lyten

Michael Lyten is the Global Product Manager – Hard Rock Haulage for the Joy Global Underground Mining Division.  He is responsible for the 18HD/22HD products, technology, and innovation. Michael has a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology (Electrical/Electronic) from the University of Southern Queensland. He has over 25 years of experience in the mining industry, focused on diesel electric drive front end loader and load haul dump products, with a strong product support and engineering background. Michael’s notable achievements include the initial low-voltage design of the Gen II L-1150 loader product and being the engineering and production liaison on the 18HD/22HD product development.
